Choosing the right Filcolana yarn - CamelliaYarns

Choosing the right Filcolana yarn

When choosing yarn, it’s no longer just about fiber content or price. What matters just as much is the final result - and how the knitted piece will look and feel after being worn for several seasons. That’s exactly why Filcolana yarn is so popular among knitters. This Danish brand offers a wide range of yarns - from wool to mohair and alpaca. In this article, we’ll explore how each Filcolana yarn can serve as the perfect tool for creating high-quality knitted pieces.

Filcolana Arwetta (80%merino wool, 20% nylon) is designed for making durable, high-quality  knits, especially for children’a clothing. If you are looking to knit soft, handmade socks, Filcolana Arwetta is also an excellent choice.

Filcolana Peruvian (100% wool) is slightly more robust, with a more pronounced yarn texture. It’s an excellent choice for structured cardigans, textured stitch patterns, and sweaters with defined shoulder lines. Filcolana Peruvian is suitable for a wide range of projects - both knitting and crochet - for children and adults. The wool comes from high altitude sheep in Peru, which gives the fiber a distinctive loft and a beautiful matte appearance.

Filcolana Pernilla is also spun from the same high-quality Peruvian wool and is one of the most versatile yarns in the collection. Pernilla is a 3-ply, 100% wool yarn with excellent stitch definition and a smooth, even structure.

Filcolana Anina Merino (100% merino wool) is a fine, exceptionally even yarn that creates a smooth and visually clean finish. It’s ideal for fitted silhouettes, classic wardrobe sweaters, and projects where comfort is essential.

Filcolana Saga (100% wool) is a very fine yarn that allows you to create lightweight yet warm garments. It’s woolen-spun, which gives the yarn exceptional lightness and elasticity. The long, high-quality wool fibers ensure durability and excellent shape retention. Garments knitted from Filcolana Saga are light and comfortable to wear year-round. The yarn can be used single, double, or even triple-stranded, and it also combines beautifully with other yarns. Saga works well for a wide range of projects - from children’s clothing, hats, and shawls to sweaters.

Filcolana Alva and Vilja embody the softness and fluid drape of alpaca. Alpaca comes from the highlands of South America, where temperatures can fluctuate from +30°C to –20°C within a single day. The hollow structure of the fibers contains tiny air pockets that provide both breathability and insulation. The result is a yarn that is lightweight yet warm, soft yet durable.

Filcolana Merci (50% cotton, 50% merino wool) is a beautiful and very soft 4-ply yarn made from an even blend of cotton and superwash merino wool. It’s ideal for spring and summer knits. The cotton content reduces elasticity slightly but adds a stable drape. This yarn is perfect for tops, children’s garments, and transitional-season sweaters.

Filcolana Tilia is a luxurious yarn spun from 70% kid mohair and 30% mulberry silk. Compared to wool, mohair has more shine and is slightly more durable. Silk, on the other hand, has been considered one of the most prized fibers for thousands of years - it’s strong, elegant, and incredibly pleasant against the skin. The combination of silk and the airy “cloud” of mohair creates one of the most refined and luxurious yarns you could wish to knit with.

Filcolana Paia (viscose with metallic fiber) is an effect yarn designed to be held together with another strand. Paia acts as a subtle yet noticeable textural accent. Thanks to its high viscose content, Paia is significantly softer than most glitter yarns. It pairs beautifully with all other Filcolana yarns and is the perfect choice if you want to add a delicate sparkle to your knitting project.
