Mohair and silk yarns are true luxuries - lightweight, airy, and effortlessly elegant. That’s exactly why they are so highly valued by both knitters and wearers. However, these delicate fibers require special care to ensure your garments retain their shape and softness over time.
In this article, you’ll learn how to properly care for mohair and silk yarn so your knits stay radiant and velvety soft for years.
How to care for mohair and silk yarn properly?
Mohair and silk are natural fibers that are highly sensitive to temperature changes, friction, and improper washing. To preserve the beauty of your knitwear, follow these simple but essential care principles.
Before washing – air out and spot clean
Before washing, gently shake out your garment in fresh air to remove dust. If there are visible stains, treat them locally using a small amount of detergent designed for wool and silk -without rubbing or heavy soaking.
2. Hand washing with a gentle detergent
The best method for mohair and silk knitwear is hand washing in cool water (up to 30°C / 86°F). Use a pH-neutral detergent that contains lanolin to help maintain the fiber’s natural elasticity.
For this purpose, Eucalan Wool Wash is an excellent choice - a biodegradable, no-rinse detergent designed for knitwear, wool and silk garments, as well as baby clothes. It is free from phosphates and synthetic fragrances, and contains lanolin, which naturally conditions fibers and helps them retain their softness.
How to wash correctly:
- Fill a basin with cool water and add a few drops of Eucalan
- Submerge the garment and let it soak gently for about 15 minutes
- Do not rub or change the water temperature to avoid felting
- After soaking, simply remove the garment and gently press out excess water - no rinsing needed
3. Gentle drying
Do not use a washing machine or tumble dryer.
After washing, wrap the garment in a clean towel and gently press to remove excess moisture. Then lay it flat on a horizontal surface to dry, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. This helps preserve both the shape and texture.
4. Fuzzing and pilling
Mohair fibers are extremely fine, so slight fuzzing may occur over time. To reduce this, you can place the garment in the freezer for a few hours before first wear.
Pilling can be gently removed using a fabric comb or lint remover, avoiding excessive friction.
5. Less washing means longer life
Mohair and silk garments do not require frequent washing. Simply airing them out in fresh air is often enough to refresh them. This helps maintain the fiber’s elasticity and natural sheen over time.
Mohair and silk yarn represent natural luxury, warmth, and elegance. This yarn do require a bit of extra care, but in return it offer softness and refinement that no synthetic material can match.
